Directed by debutant Shaneil Deo and co-written by Adivi Sesh, Dacoit: A Love Story is a intense, neo-western romantic drama that straddles the thin line between love and deep-seated resentment. The story tracks Haridas “Hari” (Adivi Sesh), a Dalit youth from Madanapalle who falls deeply in love with Saraswati “Juliet” (Mrunal Thakur), an affluent, upper-caste woman. Because of brutal village caste dynamics, their relationship is violently crushed. Saraswati is forced into an arranged marriage, but the worse is yet to come: Hari is framed for a murder he didn’t commit based on a false testimony given by Saraswati herself.
After serving 13 grueling years behind bars, the narrative fast-forwards to the chaotic era of the COVID-19 pandemic. Hari manages a daring prison escape with one burning objective—to orchestrate an elaborate hospital heist to fund his escape to Dubai, and to destroy the life of the woman who betrayed him.
The Pandemic Heist: Style Over Pacing
Shaneil Deo treats the setting with a heavy dose of visual style, utilizing the lawlessness and isolation of the pandemic to frame a unique multi-staged ambulance heist. To exact his revenge, Hari forces a desperate, now-impoverished Saraswati to act as his getaway driver to steal black money hoarded by a corrupt hospital tycoon (Prakash Raj).
While the cinematography is slick and atmospheric, the execution of the thrill elements divides the audience. The heist sequences occasionally feel too easy, lacking the relentless tension usually found in Adivi Sesh’s previous edge-of-your-seat thrillers like Kshanam or Goodachari. However, what it lacks in pure kinetic adrenaline, it attempts to make up for in emotional density.
Performances: A Stiff Dacoit and a Melancholic Juliet
Mrunal Thakur is the true anchor of the film. Her transition from a bright youngster to a broken, grief-stricken mother trying to save her dying husband (Vaibhav Tatwawadi) carries the weight of the film’s second half. Adivi Sesh delivers a stoic, albeit slightly rigid performance as the hardened fugitive. The true spark in the narrative structure arrives courtesy of Anurag Kashyap, who plays the unpredictable, spiritual-yet-eccentric cop, CI Rambabu (Swamy), keeping the audience guessing as he tracks down the duo.
The final 20 minutes completely flip the script. As CI Rambabu uncovers the truth, Hari learns that Saraswati’s decades-old betrayal was actually a supreme sacrifice—she lied under immense family pressure to send him to prison because it was the only place her family couldn’t reach to honor-kill him. This revelation melts the “Dacoit” persona, shifting the movie from a vengeance-driven thriller back into a tragic love story.

Dacoit: A Love Story is structurally ambitious but uneven in pacing. The romance doesn’t always hit the organic notes required to fully sell the heavy emotional payoff at the end, and a few action choices require a heavy suspension of disbelief.
