Red Notice (2021), directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, is Netflix’s equivalent of a flashy, expensive super-car. It boasts an incredibly sleek exterior, features three of Hollywood’s biggest stars—Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot—and reportedly cost a massive $200 million to build. Yet, once you get it on the road, you realize it is running on a highly predictable, factory-standard engine.

While it broke viewing records for the streaming platform upon release, the film sits comfortably as an ultra-polished, paint-by-numbers action-comedy that prioritizes star charisma over cinematic depth.

The Plot: A Century-Old Easter Egg Hunt: The narrative centers around the myth of Cleopatra’s three missing, jewel-encrusted golden eggs. Dwayne Johnson plays John Hartley, a top-tier FBI profiler tracking down the world’s second-best art thief, Nolan Booth (Ryan Reynolds).

After a high-stakes chase, Hartley captures Booth, only for both of them to be framed by “The Bishop” (Gal Gadot), the undisputed number-one art thief in the game. To clear his name and stop The Bishop from collecting all three eggs for a billionaire’s private collection, Hartley is forced into an uneasy, banter-heavy alliance with Booth.

The plot borrows heavily from the Indiana Jones, James Bond, and Ocean’s Eleven playbooks. It whisks the audience across global locales—from Rome and Bali to a Russian prison and the jungles of South America. However, the international backdrops often feel like green-screen stages rather than real locations, making the globe-trotting adventure feel surprisingly sterile.

The Star Power: Charisma on Autopilot: The main selling point of Red Notice is undoubtedly its trio of A-list leads. If you enjoy these actors’ established personas, you will find plenty to like here, as none of them stray even an inch outside their comfort zones.

Ryan Reynolds delivers his trademark fast-talking, self-aware, Deadpool-esque quips. He carries the bulk of the comedy, and while his rapid-fire delivery is genuinely funny in bursts, it occasionally borders on exhausting.

Dwayne Johnson plays the straight-faced, muscular anchor to Reynolds’ chaotic energy. The “buddy-cop” chemistry between the two is the film’s strongest asset, even if their dynamic feels entirely recycled from Hobbs & Shaw.

Gal Gadot clearly enjoys playing the sophisticated, elegant villain. She glides through her scenes with an effortless charm, outsmarting the boys at every turn, though her character lacks any real depth or menacing stakes.

Action and Visuals: Glossy but Artificial: With a $200 million price tag, the action sequences are frequent and fast-paced. From a chaotic prison break to an underground museum heist, the film maintains a brisk momentum that prevents it from ever becoming boring.

Unfortunately, the heavy reliance on digital effects hurts the film’s visual impact. Many action set-pieces suffer from noticeable CGI, and the lighting frequently betrays the fact that the actors are standing in front of a green screen rather than a real jungle or an exotic European balcony. The cinematography is bright and clean, but it lacks the gritty, tactile realism that makes classic adventure films feel thrilling.

The Verdict: Pure Cinematic Comfort Food: Red Notice does not attempt to reinvent the wheel, nor does it try to tell a groundbreaking story. It is a corporate product engineered for maximum mass appeal, designed to be easily consumed on a Friday night with a giant bowl of popcorn.
