The Gray Man (2022) – Detailed Movie Review
Action | Spy Thriller | Runtime: 2h 9m | Directed by Anthony Russo & Joe Russo
The Gray Man (2022) is Netflix’s high-budget action thriller directed by the Russo Brothers, known for their work on Marvel blockbusters like Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Based on Mark Greaney’s novel, the film combines globe-trotting espionage, brutal hand-to-hand combat, stylish gun fights, and a battle of personalities between a calm professional assassin and an unhinged psychopath. Featuring Ryan Gosling, Chris Evans, Ana de Armas, and Dhanush in a memorable supporting role, the movie attempts to become Netflix’s answer to franchises like James Bond, Mission: Impossible, and John Wick.
Story Overview
The story follows Court Gentry, also known as Sierra Six (Ryan Gosling), a skilled CIA black-ops operative recruited from prison into a secret program that uses dangerous individuals for covert missions. During an assignment in Bangkok, Six accidentally uncovers dark secrets involving corruption inside the CIA.
Once Six gains access to sensitive information exposing powerful figures, he becomes the agency’s target instead of its trusted operative. To eliminate him, corrupt CIA executive Denny Carmichael hires Lloyd Hansen (Chris Evans), a former CIA operative turned sadistic mercenary who enjoys violence almost as much as he enjoys mocking people.
The result is a nonstop chase across cities including Bangkok, Vienna, Prague, and Croatia, where Six fights assassins, escapes impossible situations, and tries to protect the innocent people dragged into the chaos.
Ryan Gosling as Sierra Six
Ryan Gosling plays Sierra Six with understated confidence. Unlike many action heroes who constantly deliver dramatic speeches, Six is quiet, emotionally damaged, and highly disciplined. Gosling keeps the character restrained and calm, letting body language and facial expressions carry much of the emotional weight.
His version of the spy archetype feels less glamorous and more survival-oriented. He is practical, intelligent, and constantly improvising his way through impossible situations. Gosling’s dry humor also works surprisingly well, adding subtle comedy without turning the movie into parody.
While Six may not be the most emotionally complex action protagonist ever written, Gosling gives him enough humanity to keep audiences invested.
Chris Evans Steals the Show
If Ryan Gosling provides calm intensity, Chris Evans delivers complete chaos. Evans completely abandons his heroic Captain America image and transforms into Lloyd Hansen — a mustached, arrogant, unstable assassin who enjoys cruelty.
Lloyd is theatrical, manipulative, and dangerously unpredictable. Evans clearly enjoys playing a villain and delivers some of the movie’s funniest and most memorable moments. His sarcastic dialogue and over-the-top confidence make him entertaining even when he becomes cartoonishly evil.
In many ways, Lloyd Hansen becomes the film’s biggest attraction because of how wildly entertaining he is. Every time he appears, the energy shifts immediately.
Ana de Armas Brings Strong Support
Ana de Armas performs strongly as Dani Miranda, a CIA agent caught between loyalty and morality. Instead of being reduced to a passive side character, Miranda actively participates in fights, rescue missions, and action sequences.
Her chemistry with Gosling works naturally, though the movie wisely avoids forcing unnecessary romance into the narrative. The partnership feels professional and believable, adding momentum during the film’s second half.
Dhanush’s Stylish Appearance
Indian actor Dhanush appears as Avik San, a deadly assassin known as “The Lone Wolf.” Though his screen time is limited, he leaves a strong impression through his calm screen presence and stylish combat scenes.
His confrontation with Ryan Gosling is one of the movie’s memorable sequences because of its speed, precision, and visual style. Fans may wish his role had been larger, but his performance succeeds in making the character feel mysterious and dangerous.
Action and Technical Execution
The Russo Brothers clearly invest heavily in large-scale action. Explosions, train fights, sniper attacks, hand-to-hand combat, and city-wide destruction dominate the film. One standout sequence in Prague feels particularly ambitious, blending practical destruction with CGI to create large-scale chaos.
The choreography is energetic and visually ambitious, though some scenes suffer from rapid editing and shaky camera movement. At times, the action feels slightly overproduced, reducing clarity in combat scenes.
Still, the movie consistently delivers entertainment value. If viewers enjoy stylish spy thrillers filled with action spectacle, The Gray Man rarely slows down long enough to become boring.
Strengths of the Film
- Ryan Gosling’s cool and composed performance
- Chris Evans delivers an entertaining villain role
- Fast pacing with constant action sequences
- Stylish international locations and cinematography
- Dhanush makes a memorable impact despite limited screen time
- High production values and blockbuster ambition
Weaknesses of the Film
- The story feels familiar and predictable at times
- Thin emotional depth and limited character development
- Action occasionally becomes visually overwhelming
- Some supporting characters feel underused
- The script prioritizes spectacle over storytelling
Screenplay and Writing
One major criticism of The Gray Man is that it feels assembled from familiar spy-thriller ingredients. Corrupt intelligence agencies, mysterious USB drives, unstoppable assassins, betrayals, kidnappings, and international conspiracies are all familiar territory.
The screenplay rarely surprises audiences narratively. Instead, the film depends on charisma, pacing, and visual excitement to maintain engagement. Fortunately, Gosling and Evans are charismatic enough to compensate for some predictable storytelling.
Visuals, Music, and Cinematography
The cinematography gives the movie a glossy blockbuster feel, with sleek cityscapes, colorful lighting, and large-scale destruction. Henry Jackman’s score supports the tension effectively, although it is not particularly memorable outside the film itself.
The movie looks expensive — because it is. Netflix reportedly invested one of its largest budgets into the production, and that scale is visible throughout the film.
