TN Vehicle Number Plate Model
In India, it is a requirement for vehicles to display number plates on both the front and back sides of the vehicle. The first two letters on the number plate signify the State or Union Territory where the vehicle is registered, while the following two numbers indicate the district or zone as per the RTO office records. The subsequent six letters represent a unique identification number assigned to the vehicle.

After the vehicles’ volume is recorded at the RTO district office, a four-digit unique number is assigned and appended to the alphabet, exemplified below.

Tamil Nadu RTO Related Services List
TN Learner License Application Process
To obtain a Learner’s Licence (LLR) in India, you must be at least 18 years old. Applications can be made online at https://sarathi.parivahan.gov.in/ by selecting your RTO/MVI office using your Pincode. Required documents include proof of address, proof of age, and a medical certificate if over 40. Fees can be paid online or at SBI branches, and you can schedule an appointment for a photo session at the RTO/MVI office. The LLR is valid for six months, allowing you to apply for a Driving Licence (DL) within one month. The LLR test covers traffic signs, driver responsibilities, safety measures at railway crossings, and essential vehicle documents. Fees are Rs. 230 for a single class vehicle LLR and Rs. 380 for multiple classes.
TN Driving License Application Process
To obtain a non-commercial driving license, applicants must pass a driving competency test administered by a Motor Vehicle Inspector, using documents submitted for a Learner’s License. The driving license is valid for 20 years or until age 40 (whichever comes first), while commercial licenses are valid for three years. After passing the test, biometric data will be captured for the license issuance. Applicants who fail may retest after a week, but if they fail three times, a 60-day waiting period applies. Required documents include an online application form, a valid Learner’s License, vehicle documents, and forms for driving school trainees. Fees are Rs. 800 for a single vehicle class and Rs. 1100 for double classes.
TN Duplicate Driving License Application Process
To secure a replacement for your driving license that has been lost, damaged, or destroyed, adhere to the following guidelines:
- Notify the police about the loss and acquire a certificate.
- Submit your application online, along with a payment of Rs. 500.
- Provide the necessary documents, which should include:
- Form-2 generated online
- Application in LLD format
- Police certificate obtained from the TN Police portal
- A notarized affidavit verifying that the license has not been misused.
- If relevant, bring the damaged license to the Regional Transport Office (RTO) or MVI office when you visit in person, along with the acknowledgment of your online application.
TN Renewal of Driving License Application Process
To renew a driving license, apply online within 30 days of expiry. Heavy vehicle license holders must complete a one-day refresher course. Non-transport licenses are renewed for five years, while transport licenses are renewed for three years. If expired for over five years, a fresh driving test is required. Required documents include an online-generated application form, a medical certificate for those over 40 or with a transport license, and forms for driving school training. Renewal fees are Rs.450 for transport and Rs.500 for non-transport vehicles.
TN Termination of Hire Purchase or Lease or Hypothecated Process
To terminate a hire purchase, lease, or hypothecation of a vehicle, the owner must apply for an entry in the registration certificate after paying all dues. Required documents include a notice of termination (Form-35), a no objection letter from the financier, the registration certificate, insurance certificate, valid emission certificate, and valid tax details. The service charge for the process is Rs. 25 for all vehicle classes.
TN Transport Vehicle Fitness Certificate Process
For a transport vehicle to be compliant with legal requirements, it must have a valid Fitness Certificate. This involves a thorough physical inspection by an authority, specifically a Motor Vehicle Inspector. Newly registered transport vehicles, whether used for transporting goods or passengers, are issued a Fitness Certificate (FC) that remains valid for two years, requiring renewal every two years until the vehicle is eight years old. After reaching this age, the FC must be renewed on an annual basis, provided that taxes are paid. Applications can be processed online along with the required documents.
Necessary Documentation:
- Application using Form CFA (for new vehicles).
- Application using Form CFRA (for all other vehicles).
- Registration Certificate.
- Insurance Certificate.
- Valid Emission Certificate.
- Current Tax Information.
- Proof of Speed Control Device installation, if relevant.
- The vehicle must be in a roadworthy state.
- Calibration certificate for auto rickshaw fare meters.
