  • Genre: Action, Crime, Drama, Psychological Thriller

Story Overview

The film revolves around Ranvijay Singh (Ranbir Kapoor), the emotionally unstable son of a wealthy industrialist, Balbir Singh (Anil Kapoor). Ranvijay grows up desperate for his father’s love and approval but repeatedly faces emotional neglect. His obsession with protecting his father slowly transforms him into a violent and emotionally damaged individual.

After an assassination attempt threatens Balbir Singh, Ranvijay returns to India and launches a ruthless mission of revenge against those responsible. What begins as a father-son emotional drama gradually evolves into a blood-soaked revenge thriller filled with gang wars, emotional trauma, betrayals, and psychological instability.

The story is less about revenge and more about emotional damage. Ranvijay’s actions are driven by unresolved childhood wounds, blind devotion, ego, rage, and emotional insecurity. This emotional core separates Animal from conventional gangster action films.

Performance Review

Ranbir Kapoor as Ranvijay Singh

Ranbir Kapoor delivers arguably one of the finest performances of his career. He completely disappears into the role of Ranvijay—a character who is charismatic, terrifying, emotionally broken, and deeply flawed at the same time.

His performance balances rage, vulnerability, emotional obsession, arrogance, and violence remarkably well. Whether delivering emotional breakdowns, violent confrontations, or emotionally manipulative dialogue, Ranbir dominates nearly every frame of the movie.

The transformation of his character across different timelines is convincing and layered, making Ranvijay both compelling and disturbing.

Anil Kapoor as Balbir Singh

Anil Kapoor plays the emotionally distant father with restraint and maturity. Though his screen time is limited compared to Ranbir, his presence forms the emotional foundation of the story. Balbir’s inability to emotionally connect with his son becomes the psychological trigger for the events of the film.

Bobby Deol as Abrar

Bobby Deol appears late in the movie but creates a memorable impact. Despite limited dialogue, his intimidating body language and silent menace make him an effective antagonist. His entry sequence and confrontation with Ranbir are among the film’s highlights.

Rashmika Mandanna as Geetanjali

Rashmika Mandanna delivers a solid emotional performance as Ranvijay’s wife. Her role represents emotional realism amidst the chaos. Though the screenplay occasionally sidelines her, she provides some of the film’s most emotionally grounded scenes.

Direction and Screenplay

Sandeep Reddy Vanga directs Animal with absolute confidence and complete creative freedom. His filmmaking style is loud, unapologetic, emotional, provocative, and visually aggressive.

The director creates an emotionally chaotic world where violence feels psychological rather than purely physical. Several scenes are staged with operatic intensity, dramatic slow motion, powerful music, and emotionally heightened dialogue.

However, the screenplay often becomes self-indulgent. The runtime feels excessive in places, with scenes stretching longer than necessary. Certain emotional moments repeat themselves, and some subplots feel underdeveloped.

Despite pacing issues, Vanga succeeds in making the film emotionally immersive and visually unforgettable.

Action and Violence

This is not a conventional Bollywood action film. The violence in Animal is raw, graphic, disturbing, and deliberately excessive. The action scenes are brutal and stylized, often designed to reflect Ranvijay’s unstable psychological condition.

The famous corridor fight sequence, large-scale machine gun confrontations, and emotionally charged combat scenes create unforgettable cinematic moments. However, viewers sensitive to gore or violence may find the film uncomfortable.

Music and Background Score

One of the film’s biggest strengths is its soundtrack and background score. Songs like Arjan Vailly and emotionally charged compositions elevate the intensity of key scenes.

The background music constantly amplifies tension and emotional conflict, often turning ordinary scenes into larger-than-life dramatic moments.

Cinematography and Technical Aspects

Visually, Animal looks polished and cinematic. The film uses rich color palettes, dramatic lighting, large-scale framing, and slow-motion imagery to build emotional and visual impact.

The production design reflects wealth, violence, emotional isolation, and masculine dominance. Editing could have been tighter due to the extended runtime, but technically the movie remains impressive.

Themes and Symbolism

At its core, Animal explores father-son relationships, emotional neglect, masculinity, obsession, violence, power, trauma, loyalty, and revenge.

The movie repeatedly asks whether emotional neglect can transform love into destruction. Ranvijay’s obsession with his father becomes symbolic of emotional hunger turning into emotional violence.

However, the film’s portrayal of women, masculinity, relationships, and aggression has drawn criticism. Some viewers interpret it as commentary on toxic behavior, while others believe the film glorifies problematic actions.
